Since my iBook took the spot as temporary main machine I have had problems with instability due to overheating (and the iBook’s been playing up a bit too).
To be honest it’s probably working much harder than it was ever designed to work but until my PowerBook arrives it hasn’t got much choice.
Anyway, long story short, I bought a Notebook fan and I am pleasantly surprised at how effective it is. I still get some occasional heat problems when I am really in the thick of things but the problem of heat just through sheer length of uninterrupted use has gone.
It is an incredibly simple (and inexpensive) contraption; it’s either on or it’s off and there’s nothing that makes it work with the iBook automatically. That’s probably a bonus, though, because there is less to go wrong.
It’s USB powered, though it also has a USB jack on it so you don’t lose a slot, and a 12” iBook sits on it absolutely perfectly. There is a noise factor, with two fans whizzing around but it’s nowhere near as noisy as your average tower and with my headphones on and iTunes blasting it makes no difference at all.
I am just hoping that my PowerBook will sit on one.
